	A Liberal in the US believes in civil liberties and the welfare
state.
	I am a Liberal.

	Right-wing extremists, trying to discredit us, said that our 	
	were communism.  They said that about FDR, even.That was an
	exaggeration (i.e., a lie).

In Europe (and especially here in Germany) the term "liberal" means
"libertarian". 

In my opinion the Pirate Party combines the ideas of socialism and
libertarianism. Because we don't believe in the state controlling the
copyright and patents as much as he does at the moment but at the same
time we declare art and software to be a public domain ( = serve the
whole society).
