car (which is about 25% of the cost), with a E0.03 per km charge.
A car can be bought for E20000 which is about 5000E of tax.
A car driven 25000km (this is what is given as the base rental rate in
Canada) per year would represent 750E of tax per year. The average life
of a car is usually between 10 and 15 years depending on the model. This
represents 7500E to 11250E in revenue for the government under
the new scheme, not counting petrol.
And looking more closely at the article, the tax is predicted to rise to
0.067E/km by 2018. Using this new value I get a total between 11200E and
19575E.
And this proposed tax model are for the greenest cars available.
Somehow, according to the government PR, this will cut traffic jams in
half.
