With respect to Wikileaks, and Julian Assange, PPAU have released a
statement[1] of support for Wikileaks generally, and we have criticised
the complicity of the Australian government in not condemning the
various statements by prominent persons that incite violence or promote
the assassination of Assange, who is an Australian citizen. We generally
support the actions of Wikileaks, and the important role it plays in
making our democracy more transparent. Unfortunately, governments are
not willing to come to a more transparent paradigm voluntarily, which
necessitates phenomena like Wikileaks.
An interesting comparison was made in a small independent online
magazine,[2] likening the advent of Wikileaks and this new transparency
to the digitisation of music --- a decaying, antiquated framework, being
propped up by politicians that do not believe change is necessary or
possible, because they cannot or are unwilling to see other
possibilities. Unfortunately, there isn't enough fingers to plug the
dyke, and they will have to accept new levels of transparency, and the
inevitable reforms it will bring.
