If the scanners are automated, and work with microwaves so they are
not hazardous, I see nothing wrong with using them to check for bombs
in an airport. But these machines could be generally harmful to our
rights if not used with strict controls.
The controls that seem crucial to me are:
* To require that these machines cannot be set up just anywhere, that
even the police need to demonstrate a specific reason to justify
searching you with one.
* To limit what the machines in airports (and the rest of the security
check) are allowed to take notice of: only bombs and weapons, and
items hazardous in flight; nothing else.
