[pp.int.general] pp.international.general Digest, Vol 59, Issue 53

Now at the aftermath of the "Black Day" I read things like:

"In light of recent events, I have decided to postpone Tuesday's vote on the PROTECT IP Act. There's no reason that legitimate issues raised about PROTECT IP can't be resolved. Counterfeiting & piracy cost 1000s of jobs yearly. Americans rightfully expect to be fairly compensated for their work. I'm optimistic that we can reach compromise on PROTECT IP in coming weeks,"

and:

"More time will pass with jobs lost and economies hurt by foreign criminals who are stealing American intellectual property, and selling it back to American consumers".

And I personally read it that way - all they /the pirates, the bad ones/ are foreign criminals /the stress is on the "foreign", but criminals according to which law btw?/, who steal from the /pure/ Americans. Lets aim our guns at somebody, who doesn't vote for the American president and the congress.

What do you think about that?

AFAIK ACTA has not been signed yet by the EU, but it was announced and
backed by the Council of Ministers?
http://www.out-law.com/en/articles/2011/december/council-of-ministers-backs-eu-signing-of-acta/

also no one ratified it by now AFAIK?

And how is it that not a single PP has organized a significant demonstration against EUP signing ACTA?

Would it be feasible to call for another black out day the day before? For
doing so we need to at least get Netzpolitik.org, bits of freedom, la
quadrature du net, ... on board, too, though.

The Americans at least wrote to their senators. Can't we flood with our protests "our" representatives mailboxes?

Fatigue probably, ACTA has been dragging on for a long time. Maybe we should
sort that out now as best we can and learn from it..?  We could also do with
some semi-permanent mechanisms for collaboration.  Coming into it cold on the
PPI side is hard.

I think part of the reason the blackout was so effective is because it
was an unprecedented action, not to mention the support of enwiki,
Google, Reddit etc.

I don't think a similar blackout would work (not least because we
wouldn't be able to get the high-profile names involved) but we should
try and capitalise on the wave of anti-intellectual monopoly fervour
caused by SOPA and PIPA while it's still fresh in people's minds
