We need a GNU Project for "the cloud" or whatever Silicon Valley is
    calling it this week.

The bad thing about "the cloud" is that it means so many different
things that it doesn't really mean anything at all. See
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html.

Can you say more specifically what you have in mind that we do?
Maybe I could help if I knew what it was.

I'm building it for my local social group because we need to stop
using Livejournal, but don't want to move to Facebook either.

It could be a useful program, but have you looked at the existing
free distributed social network programs to see if you could integrate
it with them? It would contribute more if it were integrated.

								  However,
I'm planning to open-source it once I'm done.

One easy way to help the cause is to teach yourself to stop saying
"open-source" any more. We are not in favor of "open-sourcing"
anything -- we advocate free software, free as in freedom.

See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html
for more explanation of the difference between free software and open
source.
