Personally, I don't even consider this as a payment for software in the
classic sense, but rather, paying for a service. The software itself is
free, as there's nothing restricting you from compiling the whole thing
for free and then putting the binary on The Pirate Bay.

In fact, I've done so a few months back when the GPG plugin for Apple's
Mail was only made available after a donation:

What you're paying for in this case, is basically a binary: the service
of having the developers compile it for you so you don't have to.
