    If the price of oil goes up, then the price of petrol goes up, then the
    price to transport raw materials to make the FooWidget goes up, thus the
    price of FooWidgets goes up etc. etc.
 
This is true.  Making oil more expensive will mean consuming less
of many things.

If this is the price we must pay to avoid a disaster that kills
billions of people and extinguishes half the species on Earth,
don't you think we should pay it?
