In this, we agree completely. Voting creates losers, and therefore, I
would try almost every other means of conflict resolution first.
When I say "meritocracy", I am referring to promoting diversity in a
way that people don't get to say what other people can and cannot do;
rather, activists get to take initiatives and other activists get to
join them of their own free will, with nobody having the right to vote
their initiative down.
If buy-in across the board is critical, I would absolutely promote an
attempt to reach consensus. You could argue that this is democracy,
but it would be a valid decision under most conflict resolution
models, including democracy. (When I say "internal democracy", I am
first and foremost referring to voting, where some people will leave
the conflict resolution as losers. In my experience, that method of
conflict resolution is very costly to the activists' energy and focus.)
Cheers,
Rick
