A draft rapport will, at any rate, get mangled by the MEPs still. It is
not take-it-or-leave-it, as some would suggest. You do not prevent this
mangling by starting halfway, rather, you start halfway in a tug of war.
A tug of war you can always walk away from if you no longer wish the
rapport to carry your name - and the present draft should lead to one
foot out of the door already. Julia has chosen then, to become the
postergirl for the legitimacy of this legislation.
If it should be a radical viewpoint that non-commercial use of
copyrighted works does not merit commercial reward, that goes rather
against economics. You cant get a piece of the cake where is no cake.
But then I suppose that is the radical viewpoint according to Julia,
whereas creating an artificial market for the piecewise consumption of
digital data by means of copyright would not be a radical step towards
government-controlled information distribution.
More worrisome is the lack of communication this highlights. To those
offended by Amelia`s public outing I would offer that one can be denied
influence before publication, but not an opinion after publication. In
fact, such publicity might be the only way to reclaim some legitimacy in
the public eye.
