Part of the problem with populism though is that even using that word in
the modern political world is weaponize d and charged in a way that's
highly misleading.
What am I driving at? Right wing populism would tend in the direction of
prejudice and dividing up the wealth in a prejudiced fashion so that the
"lessers" get "less property." instead of confronting the super wealthy.
But left wing populism does try to confront the fat cats. In my own country
the Democratic party has shunned populism altogether and it's depressing
because populism need not necessarily be bigoted.
But now the word is charged so much even use it and the REAL thinkers will
IMMEDIATELY think "RACISM! HOMOPHOBIA!" .. I understand the implicit
associations and even why:

But I live in a Democratic republic that tends to handle these problems
relatively gracefully in that there's a bill of rights that those seeking
to impose their prejudices on others really can't cross because it provides
for minority rights and requires extraordinary majorities to allow those
rights to be eroded.
America has a history of a left populism though- FDR.
that is the suppressed discourse.
