Hi Mikko,

the thing is, it takes an external catalyzing event -- a so-called
black swan -- to break through to mainstream awareness. One needs to
capitalize on events like this, that can cause us to be in televised
news every hour on every channel.

In order to do that, speed is of the essence. Don't bother translating
press releases into English. Don't bother adjusting words, voting, or
whatever to perfection. Get them good enough in the local language, and
get them out there. We need to be the news provider and the quote
provider. If we're not the first to provide a press release, or at
least provide it while the story is being written, then somebody else
will fill that role. It should not take more than one hour from
hearing of an event in our fields until a press release with quotes is
in the hands of national media, usually through e-mail.

The key is OWNING THE ISSUE. You've got to own the issue, and claim
ownership of the issue. Deliberating over wording in a press release
overnight simply won't do. Get quotes out there, and as soon as you can.

In this case, Swedish media would consider the story to be of low
value, so I expect the same to hold true for Finland. All news and all
politics are local. NL media would be a different matter.

Cheers,
Rick

Hi Rick,
I certainly sympathize with your call for action. The Finnish pirate party
did send press releases on the topic. However, at least in Finland, not
many newspapers picked up on the story, probably due to the fact that the
original story is written very badly.
To me, as I read it, it sounded like ramblings of a conspiracy theorist,
not of like a reasonable and trustworthy source at all. It would help
tremendously, if there was a more press release kind of information packet
of what has happened in English to which we could refer to.

You respond to a different question. I did not say "you need to help The
Pirate Bay". I did not say "you need to use grassroots activism".
I said "you need to use this enormous media cue to profile YOURSELVES in
MAINSTREAM MEDIA". Send press releases everywhere, with quotes,
commenting on the story. Be the news source and provide plenty of quotes.
I see a lot of people here acting like they don't WANT their own pirate
party to become nationally known. Events like this require immediate
action towards the press. Publishing a story on one's own page does not
count.
It is imperative that oldmedia (press, TV, radio) in every country
associates these kinds of issues (due process of law, copyright fraud
events, etc.) with the local PP representatives and call and ask for
comments. PPSE is there since 2006. I believe PPDE has gotten there. In
order to get there, you need to see these catalyzing events for what
they are, and BE THE NEWS SOURCE for THE OLDMEDIA.
That does SPECIFICALLY NOT include publishing stories on your own web
page. It does, however, include sending a press release to all relevant
oldmedia (national TV, national radio, press, everything with broad
coverage and specialized technology coverage) as soon as one hears of
the event. In PPSE, we've trimmed the response time to about 30 minutes.
When the Pirate Bay was raided on May 31, 2006, our response time was
about one hour. Everybody else needs to do as good in order to be the
FIRST with comments to media.
If the story has already broken, it's too late to provide comments. The
reporters are busy writing other stories then.
YOU NEED TO OWN THE PIRATE TOPICS IN OLDMEDIA. That is an absolute
precondition for success. Oldmedia must know they can rely on you as a
newsfeed in this field, and that you can always provide meaningful
comments. Big events like these are key to getting to that position.
