This project reminds me of this project: http://vimeo.com/15091562 ("Homemade Spacecraft")

There is probably a lot that can be learned from that project.

Wow!

Seems like a response from the community with some substance to it! I
like the idea of "Practical Politics" instead of just "Political
Politics". Not to say one goes without the other, but in the end your
either do or you don't.

I might have arranged with some funding already for some rudimentary
electronics:

Regarding the details about the flight, nothing is decided. Its just
clear that its better if it stays up longer, stays over land and stays
alive. Apart from that, I guess its up to the ambitions of the
project.

I have compiled a starting position of stuff that might provide stuff
for this - feel free to look over the details and maybe hint of better
stuff you know of:

Baloon: http://www.scientificsales.com/
Computer: http://www.gumstix.com/
GPS module: expansion board for gumstix at http://www.gumstix.com/
Solar panel: http://teknikhamstern.se/Butiken/tabid/61/ProductID/33/Default.aspx

I don't know what kind of problem the communication will introduce for
me. I guess both weather condition and the flight altitude will cause
different challenges. I think this might be the most challenging part.
How to acctually make it possible for the site to send and receive
data from internet...

I have discovered an initial problem that needs to be thought of:

* Helium baloons leak their gas because of the atoms escaping through
the latex in the baloon. This makes them crash after maybe some 3-5
days. With a substance called "Hi float" pumped into the baloon it can
be prolonged, but not enough. So - how the hell can one force a baloon
to stay in the air for alot longer?!

Can the collective mind of PPI solve a problem with making a baloon
stay up in the air for lets say - a year ?

If we can make a file-sharing site go orbit - what can we do else?
/Erik

BTW: The tips you gave Francisco George are very interesting. I will
look into that for sure. The idea of a satellite is wonderful, even
if maybe in the far end of reality.

Andrew Norton:

>> The main thing that will drive the design will be the flight profile.
>> How high, and how long. do you want a weather-baloon style uncontrolled

High enough.
As long as possible - a year(s) ?

>> climb, or something more like an airship, or an ultra-high altitude
>> glider?

High enough to be cool, low enough to be able to reach with communications.

>> Or, most ambitiously, do you want something to LEO? Then, do you
>> want minutes, hours, days? Recovery+relaunch? Geostationary, or not?

I don't really expect to get the stuff back. Its probably very
likely it turns up in the sea or so. Geostationary is probably way to
difficult as a first project. Its better to set a goal and reach it
and then look at the stars.
