newspapers. But it looks like the news is out now, and international<br>
reports are coming in: Are there any reactions planned? We could use<br>
some information to be prepared.<br>

There was only one article so far in Switzerland, so maybe it is keeping<br>
under the hood, but I think we should be prepared.<br>

There is no reaction from the German pirates so far, I think it's<br>
important that they take a serious step in cleaning up this mess. It's<br>
really destroying all our reputation...<br>

My 2 cents :)<br>

Actually it is not disaster, it is simply* controversial* - and media love<br>
it, as I've have read today (different 5 articles)<br>
<br>
I figured the book brings more value to Pirate parties then this little<br>
controversy...this is just my opinion (media-PR-marketing professional)<br>
It is awesome for press. And it is good for Pirates also becazse the book<br>
is promoting serving the Internet as a lifestyle and Pirate party as its<br>
organic step forward in defense of Internet freedom.<br>
<br>
However the book was downloadable until few days ago....Hopefully the book<br>
will be translated into English and Chinese ...oh wait, that would be a<br>
perfect world domination plan :)<br>
<br>
I would suggest to take this easy, no harm can be done from novels and art<br>
in general. Media are living out of controversy. Pirates can only benefit<br>
from this kind of refined media attention. It's art, and art is the final<br>
ladder in development of human species.<br>
I would be glad to have this book in South East European languages as soon<br>
as possible. As I see it can easily be game changer for generations that<br>
are not yet old enough to vote, but hey..!<br>

Yes, there was a DMCA notice sent ; but from the editor, not from Julia.<br>
And it appears quite certain she did not wanted this.<br>

It might be possible that she did not make it clear with her editor that<br>
the book would be under a free licence, which would be a mistake, but<br>
not as bad as what the media are interpreting.<br>

It is also possible that she made it clear and had a special contract,<br>
but the editor was not very careful and added it to the list of its<br>
books, and a robot or some employee found it on the platform and sent a<br>
DMCA notice automatically.<br>
<br>
We do not know what happened exactly, so we should ask everybody to be<br>
careful about interpretation, and give Julia the right to a fair trial.<br>
<br>
Alternatively, we can notice that a lot of people are waiting for<br>
mistakes made by pirates in Germany, as PP-DE is becoming more and more<br>
dangerous for all the current political class, and most of them and<br>
their contacts will enjoy using anything they can to destroy the image<br>
of PP-DE.<br>
<br>
Even if Julia made a mistake, I do not think it was as bad as what most<br>
people think at first look. Anyway, what is important is how she and the<br>
PP-DE will react if they made an error, and what they will have learned<br>
from it.<br>
<br>
(I have already been interviewed by a French independent media about<br>
books on this matter by the way).<br>

Even if we don't see any reactions immediately, this is likely to come up (potentially for all parties) when talking about this issue, especially in the context of debates with industry. It could be used to undercut our positions, essentially that we will revert our positions if it comes to a crunch, or when we have personal stakes in the game. Even if we don't react now (and I think it would be best for Germany to deal with the issue clearly..), we have to expect it to come up in future. Essentially PPDE can have a significant impact on other PP's simply due to it's visibility.<br>

It would obviously be best for PPDE to put something out that gives a clear indication of what Julia was trying to do (I assume she tried to get a contract as close to our positions as possible). The most obvious approach here would be to point out it was an individual decision, that in terms of the 'deal' (as I've read it) one could argue it's inline with our policy positions (10 year copyright in the UK..) as Julia has limited the amount of time she has 'handed her rights over'. It could also be argued (although I'd avoid it), that this is a product of a broken system, where even someone very much supportive of copyright reform has to conform to be able to participate fully in the creative process.<br>
<br>
Of course that doesn't change the fact that there are DCMA notices with a prominent pirate's name on out there (I'm more used to receiving them..). There is of course little we can do other than denounce, in a reasonable way, the situation and make our own positions as clear as possible. It would also be rather useful to line up the artists, writers and others in the party that are involved in creating and releasing work in permissive ways so that we can at the very least point out that most of us do practice what we preach.<br>
