Hi,

a network of groups from Germany and Switzerland have prepared a
statement about intellectual property rights for the upcoming G8
meeting. I would be happy if other pirate parties from around the globe
would join us as signatories. All the details below.

cheers,
Christof

Dear friends

attached you'll find the final version of the declaration concerning G8
and IPR. Thanks to all of you who provided comments, critics and help in
the last weeks – this was very helpful and I think we now have a much
better declaration than we had in the beginning of this process. The
debate on content is closed now but please, if you find any mistakes
concerning the language used please send me a mail.

Now search for first signatories has to be started – next Wednesday (May
23rd) the meeting of the G8 ministers on IPR is starting and so we
should send out press-releases on Tuesday, May 22nd to ensure that
newspapers writing on the start of that meeting take in the declaration
(for more information on this please see below).

So time is short and I want to ask you first to SIGN ON AS FIRST
SIGNATORY (organizations as well as private persons are invited) and
second to SHARE THE STATEMENT with people you know, send it to relevant
lists and ASK RELEVANT PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS TO SIGN ON AS FIRST
SIGNATORIES.

People wishing to be first signatories can either SEND A MAIL TO ME (if
you are representing a organization please send your logo as well as
your web address - buhr at wissensallmende.de ) OR WRITE YOUR SIGNATORY
DIRECT INTO THE wiki (http://declarationg8andipr.pbwiki.com/ , password:
g82007). This list is intended to give all of us an overview on who
already signed on and I will include signatories I receive per mail
there as well.

For having a faster flow of information I included everyone involved in
the process till now into a mailinglist. It is not moderated so please
feel free to post comments and ideas.

SOME IDEAS AND QUESTIONS ON FURTHER PROCEDURE:

***************
Press releases
***************

We plan to announce this declaration on May 22nd GMT+1 with permission
to print the statement on the 23rd.

Questions:
Should we send out joint press releases nation by nation? We will make a
draft release over the weekend in German. If anyone is interested in
joining us or getting our draft to use it for your own press release
please contact me. I will send out a link to a wiki page with the draft
on Sunday evening.

Who else plans to release something at that date or possibly later?
Please send a short note to the list. If for this an English translation
of the German press release would be helpful than please give me a hint
– I'll try my best.

If you have personal contact to a journalist it would be very helpful if
you could forward the release directly to him.

************
Translations
************
A German translation will be ready by Monday morning. As there are
possibly discussions on that to be made it would be very helpful if all
German friends wishing to be included in this discussion send me a short
message. I than will send a link to a wiki with the text to you on
Monday and hope that we have it ready at the evening. If there is a
chance please take note on this in your schedule.

Does anyone planning to translate to other languages?

********************************
Official Website for signing on
*******************************

Signing on should be opened on May 23rd around noon to be ready if
newspapers and other media are picking up this topic.

We will need one place where we collect all signatories. It would be
possible to do this on our web page (www.wissensallmende.de) if you like
that idea. I hope to be able to ensure that we have a good tool for
this. I will get more information on this on Friday. If you have a tool
for collecting signatures online please say hello. Also if you are very
familiar with typo3 – which we use on our page – our webmaster will me
very pleased by a helping hand.

****************************************************************
More detailed criticism on G8 policy to be included on websites
****************************************************************

I think we need more detailed critics besides this statement to include
it on the web page where later people and organizations will be able to
sign on.

We already have some more detailed critics on our chancellors plans –
but I fear I'll not be able to write it down over the weekend – I'll try
to write a statement on the German chancellors plans at the beginning of
the week. If anyone would be able to translate it from German to English
it would be very great.

Also it would be great if some people could provide a written critic on
their governments position or on politics of other G8 members as well.
Please send a short message to this list if you already have some or if
you'd like to write something, perhaps other people would like to join you.

So - this for the moment - I'm looking forward to your replies, ideas
and critics and hoorays.

All best,

Petra
