I don't want to play devils advocate, but before we really panic: there has 
been an obligation for public telecommunication service providers to provide 
the *ability* for wiretapping in the Dutch telecommunication act al least 
since 2001 when I did an exam in telecom law. And I believe it is based on a 
European directive, like most telecommunication law. Logically it is only 
used in specific cases, if there is a concrete suspicion, otherwise the 
amount of data would be unmanageable. I am no necessarily opposed against 
such "wiretapping" in *concrete* criminal cases. If the cost if the 
investment for providers is born by the government. As law enforcement cost 
is always born by the government. Except in this case, I am afraid.

Fortunately the article says phone AND internet because phone OVER the 
internet (Skype in particular) escapes from data retention (at least) as was 
admitted in our parliament.
