Funny, that a Danish man coins the typical "dike" respons.
Some people jokingly say, that if the sea level rises, the Danish,
Germans and Flemish will have extra trouble.
Because of dutch dikes, and pumping water outside of our borders.
If there are no dikes and "Gemalen" ; water pumps, the "Amersfoort at
sea" Scenario is more than plausible.
As you can see at these pictures;
http://www.internetweer.nl/zonderdijken.htm
http://www.dearend.nl/WeatherLink/nieuws/2007/zee_rijst_niet_pan_uit/ahn-nederland1.jpg
This shows that , 2 or 5 meters can be manageable. ( But not
desirable! )
However, more than 5 meters would almost double the square kilometers
of land that need protection
In that scenario, you could probably just as well create land out of
the North Sea.
Keep in mind that in 1953, there was a mayor disaster in the
Netherlands.
Destroying/flooding almost an entire province.
At that time, the average dike height was aprox. 4 meters above NAP.
And we learned from that disaster.
The dutch should not fear raising sea levels, but their government
investing not enough money into
dike maintenance. Since that, _could_ become a real treat in the future.
