Incubate Pirate Conference: September 17, Midi Theater
Program includes: Matt Mason, Hank Shocklee (The Bomb Squad), Xavier
Le Roy and Generation Bass Forum. Tickets: Pay What You Want!
The Incubate Pirate Conference is a day on piracy in the arts on
September 2010 in Midi Theater Tilburg. The Pirate Conference offers
reflection on the value of creation in society. What do artists think
about the current state of issues? How can they best react to the
current operation of copyright? What strategies, tactics and
interventions can be used?
Matt Mason, recently voted Pirate of the Year by BusinessWeek, will
give a keynote speech at the Pirate Conference. Mason is the
bestselling author of The Pirate’s Dilemma, the first book in the
history of the world to hit the number one spot on Amazon’s economics/
free enterprise bestseller list, and the rap bestseller list, at the
same time. In his book, Mason gives an overview about different
subcultures that have brought on the most innovative ideas in history
that later have become worldwide industries.
Hank Shocklee from American producers team The Bomb Squad is known for
his pioneering work with hip-hop acts such as Public Enemy, Ice Cube
and Run D.M.C. Shocklee uses lots of samples in his productions. Job
de Wit will interview him on sampling and the future of copyright.
Visual artist Rob Scholte will give a lecture on the meaning of piracy
within his work and in visual arts in general. Scholte's works are
controversial because he often uses existing images. He shocks
audiences with his works and knows how to effectively make the media
and cultural industry respond to his will.
Performance artist and choreographer Xavier Le Roy invites Márten
Spángberg (essayist, dance critic, dramaturge and choreographer) for a
discussion on recycling / re-interpretation and re-enactment of
performance art. During the Generation Bass Forum leading artists in
non-Western contemporary dance will exchange views on blogs, sharing
music and the traditional record industry.
To ensure accessibility and to fit the theme Piracy, the festival has
chosen for the Pay What You Want principle. This gives the visitor the
control to decide what the value of this conference and the public
debate should be. Tickets can be bought through http://incubate-innovation.org/tickets
. Visitors can indicate how many tickets they want to buy and what
total amount of money they would like to pay for them.
