They may not have have gained popularity, but what's important is that
they're out there, for us to use when the need arises. You can see them
as the underground waiting in case of situation on the surface getting
bad enough. They're not centralised, not official, and not hugely
popular, but all these can be viewed as advantages in certain
circumstances.

They're another good example of how neutrality is built into the core of
the internet.

Actually, OpenNIC looks very promising in that it resolves ICANN
domains as well (so it can be used as a drop-in replacement DNS without
the need of sacrificing anything).
