I think that is unfortunate for you that you use a nonfree program.
However, message is in a standard format; it does not require me to
run nonfree software in order to read it. Thus, your means
of communication does not impose use of nonfree software.
It does not exclude free software campaigners.
The point is that the other means of communication used by the conference
should not exclude free software campaigners either.
