    Hmm, I would have to disagree on this point. While the moral rights are
    relatively weak in the US, the copyright monopoly umbrella does
    explicitly contain the right to be associated with one's work.
    Plagiarism would violate this.

You are right that plagiarism sometimes violates copyright law.  I
should have said, "The essence of plagarism has nothing to do with
copyright."

Plagiarism does not always violate copyright -- the copyright holder
may be dead thousands of years, or might sell you a license.  But it
is still plagiarism.
