[pp.int.general] Online voting versus online discussion

Dear et al,

So the solution seems simple to me. Transparency could be the rule. First, every participant eligible to vote, gets a new email account, say PPI1-100,000 at Gmail.com taking 20 seconds.. The new email address is sent to voter maillist. A simple Google doc with button questions in multiple languages emailed to only those on the list. Tabulated instantly. One vote for each emailed invitation. Seems good, although I prefer a face to face vote, which is definitely not secret.

I just went through a vote with 500+ at the annual Republican elections to vote in the years committee officers in the county that controls the state. I ran for the top position, chair, then when I lost, I ran for Vice Chair. I left before hearing the count for Vice. The votes are written for officers, kinda secret, and then yelling yay or nay for matters brought up, definitely not secret. Even so called secret votes, aren't. I have been running to oust a long standing legislator here in Seattle. I asked how the votes went and was given a PDF of who people voted for under the heading of Write In.

It's a good discussion ...

I remain sincerely yours,

John Dickinson

The problems of computerized voting are consequences of the secret ballot.
In a non-secret election, it is easy to avoid these problems.
It's sufficient to publish the complete list of everyone's vote.
