    One of the things that I didn't know is that the USA has had secrecy
    of the ballot for a decade now; previously, the vote was public for
    everyone to know.

I suspect there is a misunderstanding there.  Secret ballots in US
elections are much older than that.  I first voted around 1972, and
my ballot was seret.
