Environmentalism is simply the political stance that protecting the
environment is important.

Perhaps there are people who worship trees, but there are not very
many of them nowadays.  The environmentalists I know hold this stance
based on reasons.  These are mine:

* Because damaging the environment is likely to result in hurting people.

* Because biodiversity is part of the complexity of the Earth and,
  once lost, takes millions of years to replace.
