    Actually you don't even need to use the DNI for online
    banking if you don't want to, you can use regular username+password
    authentication.

That's good, but (I was told) the municipal swimming pools in
Barcelona require users to show their DNI to prove they have paid the
annual subscription fee.  If I recall right, they don't allow any
other method.  Using the DNI was easy and they saw no reason to allow
anything else.
