    There are a few ways to prove that you are yourself using official ids in
    Spain.

I don't know whether swimming pool in Barcelona accepts the others ways.
But even if it does, that's not the point.  The point is that the
very existence of DNI made it natural and easy for that swimming pool
to require its users to identify themselves.  In the US, they would
have found that so inconvenient that they would not have done it.
