[pp.int.general] pirate movement scout [was: RE: An International Pirate Party Contact and Information List]

Hey all

I think instead of putting more tasks on a board that has never worked well
(mainly because too many people dropped out, not meant as an offense to
those who were/are members of the board and worked hard) we should get more
volunteers to work administrative tasks. The international newsletter that
Colentine is setting up is a good example for this.
I think we should encourage normal pirates (not just PPI delegates) for
tasks like this. Keeping in touch with a few board members (or Checking
wikis if they are set up and updated on things like member counts) of
various pirate parties is not that much of a task, if we have 10 people who
are taking responsibility of updating the information of 5 PPs each we
should be able to keep track of 50 pirate parties.

I think what we need to do is find out why 'the swarm' has not worked as
well on a super-national level when it comes to pirate parties, and
encourage more people to take an interest in this kind of matters. This
involves translating (which admittedly is working quite well), sorting and
updating information for newsletters and in wikis, help to put NGOs that
are close to the PP movement like Pirate Gaming, Musikpiraten, Pirates
without borders, young pirates or the various pirate podcasts on an
international level by translating works and in general doing advertisement
for them, and so on. This is working remarkably well on a national level in
more than one country, and the ACTA protests for example, or Rick
Falkvinge's blog, show that international coordination is totally possible
in these fields, independently of any official structure or organization.
Now, it is not the task of PPI to provide all of this, especially not of
the board. Many of the infrastructure (pads, wikis, PWB) and contents
(Musikpiraten) is readily available. We, as people that are somewhat
interested in seeing our topics to be brought to an inter- and/or
supernational level, as well as in international cooperation in general (I
am assuming here of course) are responsible for that in the end.

As long as the interest by most ordinary members to support the officials
that are elected into the PPI board or organize various NGOs connected to
Pirate ideology is low we are fighting a steep uphill battle here. I would
go as far as saying that much of the trouble the PPI board has had so far
could have been avoided by having a volunteer workforce double their size
(which is relatively modest, ask anybody who's working for the German
board) to fullfill tasks.
